An elevator device, capable of saving space and simplifying the structure of a governor, is provided in an elevator having a rated car service speed that differs when ascending and descending. A sheave (9b), supported by a horizontal axle (9e) and around which the upper end of a governor rope (9a) is wound and from which the same hangs, and two types of governor units (9A, 9B) are disposed, and a displacement prevention member (9C3) is made to be slideable. Displacement of the governor weights (9B1, 9B2) of the descending side governor unit (9B) caused by centrifugal force is prevented or released by way of the displacement prevention member (9C3) mediated by a displacement prevention means (9C) according to the direction of motion of the elevator car. When displacement is prevented, the descending side governor unit (9B) is inactive and the prescribed overspeed while ascending is detected by the ascending side governor unit (9A); when displacement prevention is released, the descending side governor unit (9B) is made active and detects the prescribed overspeed while descending.
