When a simple magnification optical system is used in playback of a storage medium in which a large number of minute modified regions have been formed three dimensionally inside a solid, contrast is lacking, there is significant inter-layer crosstalk, and an adequate S/N ratio cannot be obtained. Accordingly, this invention provides a recording medium in which at least one layer is configured using a set of two adjacent sub-layers, a dot of one sub-layer corresponding to recorded data '1' and a dot of the other sub-layer corresponding to '0'.
