The machine (826) has a compression unit (817) provided downstream a labeling unit (806). A storage device (819) is provided downstream of the compression unit to store empty label carrier tape (818). The compression unit exerts a preset pressing force on the empty label carrier tape. The compression unit is able to pressurize pressing force of up to 0.5, 1, 1.5 or 2.5 kN, preferably in a range of 0.75 to 1.25 kN on the empty label carrier tape. The storage device is designed as a winding apparatus with a drivable mandrel (820). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a labeling machine for self-adhesive labels.
