The tool (1) has a drive motor (11) that drives a saw chain (10) to guide a guide rail (9) in a running direction (28), and is arranged in a chain wheel space (44) covered by a sprocket (8). The chain which drives the respective sections (29,30) of the deflection regions (26,27), is located on a sprocket (22). The distances between a peripheral wall (40) of a chain wheel space and a roof of the chain is less than 18 mm which is about 50% over the distance from one deflecting region to an outlet opening (47) from the chain wheel space over an entire width (K) of the chain.
