[Class 40 (i)] The output of a ship's power plant is reduced, when the depth of immersion of the propeller falls below a datum value, by means of a pressure chamber, in communication with the sea below the low-water level of the ship, which operates a pressure-controlled relay, thereby actuating the power plant controlling means. As shown, the butterfly valve 2, which controls the supply of working fluid to engine 1, is operated by the electrically energized thruster 4, of standard form, through link 3. Thruster 4 is energized through relay 5, comprising manually-controlled switch 8 and a solenoid 7 which is energized through a fluid pressureoperated switch 6, connected by a tubular conduit 18 to a pressure chamber mounted on the hull, below the low-water mark. The conduit 18 is oil-filled up to a point adjacent to the pressure control switch 6, the expansible bellows of which are air filled. A reduction in the propeller immersion depth below a minimum, and beyond which the propeller would overspeed, cause the energization of the thruster 4 and a reduction of power to the prime mover, through valve 2, which is returned to the normal setting, by the thruster restoring springs, when the propeller again moves below the minimum depth. The device is unaffected by an increase in the propeller depth beyond the minimum and the butterfly valve may be operated manually by closure of switch 8.</p>
