A thermal transfer printer comprises: first 5 and second 7 spools to support a ribbon ; a ribbon drive to move ribbon from the first spool 5 to the second spool 7; a printhead 6 configured to selectively transfer ink from the ribbon to a substrate 14, the printhead pressing the ribbon and substrate 14 together against a print roller 15; a drive to move the substrate past the printhead 6; a sensor (115, fig 10) configured to monitor rotation of the print roller and generate a signal indicative thereof; and a controller configured to determine a measure of movement of the substrate and/or ribbon past the print roller based on the signal output by the sensor (115). The thermal transfer printer may form part of a label printer including supply and take up spools for a web of labels. |
