Aromatic amines are prepared by passing an aromatic nitro compound with water and hydrogen over a catalyst comprising molybdenum, tungsten or chromium sulphide, with recycling of water and hydrogen at a temperature not above 390 DEG F., the reaction zone being maintained at 330-470 DEG F. and preferably 330-450 DEG F., and the reactant inlet temperature not exceeding 360 DEG F. The catalyst may be activated by carbon disulphide. The reaction pressure may be 600-4500, preferably 3000-4500 lb. per sq. in. |
