A wireless communication system comprising a base station and a terminal (10), with the terminal communicating with the base station via a plurality of transmission points (12) in a cooperative multipoint (CoMP) transmission scheme. The base station is arranged to provide the terminal with a configuration which comprises a resource pattern defined by a plurality of different sets of time and/or frequency locations, and the resource pattern is associated with a behaviour of the terminal with respect to the signals contained in the pattern. The behaviour includes which of a plurality of different types of measurement the terminal is expected to make when receiving the signal in each of the plurality of different sets of time and/or frequency locations, the type of report, if any, which the terminal is expected to provide to the said base station on the basis of the measurements. The terminal is arranged to receive the configuration and responsive thereto, when receiving the signal, to follow the behaviour with respect to the signal. When applied to CSI-RS of an LTE system for example, this adds flexibility to the use of CSI-RS resource patterns so that they can be used for new purposes. |
