[Class 39 (ii).] In an electric battery lamp of the kind provided with a dimming resistance in series with the lamp bulb an on-and-off switch of the screwdown type is arranged first to engage a flexible contact strip 15, Fig. 1, connected to the resistance 11, and when depressed further to engage a contact plate 13 by which the circuit is completed directly and the resistance shortcircuited. As shown, the switch comprises a screw-threaded spindle 5 passing through a boss 4 in the cover 3 of the battery container, an operating knob 6 being provided at the upper end of the spindle. A disc 7 of fibre or other insulating material secured to the underside of the cover 3 is surrounded by the helical resistance coil 11 which rests upon an insulating member 9 secured by screws to the fibre disc 7, one end of the resistance coil being connected at 12 to the metal plate 13 and the other end being connected at 14 to the contact strip 15, which is riveted to the insulating member 9 and is located within a slot in the latter. The underside of the plate 13 is in contact with one of the resilient contact strips of the battery. A dimmed light is obtained by screwing the spindle 5 into contact with the strip 15, further rotation of the spindle causing the strip 15 to make contact with the plate 13 and short-circuit the resistance to obtain a bright light. |
