<p>A method of press moulding a material to form a fibre-reinforced resin matrix composite part comprising the steps of: providing a mould tool comprising an upper mould part having a first moulding surface for moulding a first moulded surface and a lower mould part having a second moulding surface for moulding a second moulded surface of the moulded part; providing a multilaminar panel of moulding material 66 comprising at least one layer of fibres and at least one layer of resin; the multilaminar panel having first 68 and second 70 opposite major surfaces, a surface resin layer 72 being at or adjacent to the first major surface and a dry fibre layer 74 forming the second major surface; locating the moulding material in the mould tool by disposing the second major surface on the second moulding surface of the lower mould part, the lower mould part being at an elevated temperature as compared to the temperature of the moulding material; closing the mould tool to define a substantially closed mould cavity containing the moulding material; applying pressure to the moulding material to configure the moulding material in a fully moulded shape, and after the applying pressure step, the resin in the panel fully impregnates the dry fibres and substantially fully curing the resin to form a moulded part. The dry fibre layer provided as the second major surface against the second moulding surface may allow the moulding material to be positioned on the heated tool surface without inadvertent bonding, avoids premature melting of the resin and enhances air removal. The resin layer provided at or adjacent to the first major surface enhances the surface quality. The moulding material may further comprise a syntactic core layer 76 and is preferably used to mould a vehicle body panel.</p> |
