[Class 38 (v).] A H.T. switch for controlling X-ray apparatus comprises two spaced metal globes 6, 7 of relatively large curvature so that a discharge does not readily pass between them, the upper globe 7 having an aperture 15 through which a switching rod 14 is adapted to project. Normally the rod 14, which is attached to an armatute, is held within the globe 7 by an electromagnet 9. On opening the switch 13 in the circuit of the electromagnet the rod 14 falls into a recess in the globe 6 thus bridging the two globes and allowing a potential accumulated on the condenser 3 to energize the X-ray tube 1. The rod 15 may, alternatively, be arranged so that its tip does not actually touch the lower globe but approaches sufficiently closely to permit a discharge in the gap between the tip of the switching rod and the globe. On reclosing the switch 13 the rod 14 is again raised and the circuit of the X-ray tube broken. After switching off by retraction of the rod the globes may be subsequently drawn apart to isolate the tube or to break an arc which may persist between them. The globes 6, 7 may be replaced by paraboloids or by flat plates the edges of which are bent or thickened to form rounded portions. A suitable inductance 4 is included in the energizing circuit.
