In an internal combustion engine, a variable compression ratio mechanism able to change a mechanical compression ratio and a variable valve timing mechanism able to change a closing timing of an intake valve are provided. When a load is higher than a predetermined load, an amount of intake air inside a combustion chamber is controlled by controlling the closing timing of the intake valve, while when the engine load is lower than the predetermined load, the amount of intake air inside the combustion chamber is controlled by controlling both the closing timing of the intake valve and the opening degree of the throttle valve. |
