A modular ceiling comprises first and second main runners, a cross member, a panel and at least one fastener for each main runner. The first and second main runners have respective upper and lower surfaces. The upper surface of each main runner has a retaining cavity and at least one lip provided on each side of the cavity. A cross member connects the first and second main runners. The panel is disposed between the main runners and is supported, at least in part, thereby. Each fastener mates with the retaining cavity of its main runner to vertically support it and is secured to the hidden overhead structure. The fastener has bottom and top portions thereof. The fastener bottom portion mates with the retaining cavity. The fastener top portion has a section upwardly extending from the bottom portion and defines a planar vertical lateral side that is interfaced with and fastened to a planar vertical lateral side of a portion downwardly extending from the overhead hidden structure.
