The present invention relates to a set-top box and an operating method thereof capable of downloading a proper DRM client for a safe content transmission. In case a DRM client technology installed in a secondary device is different or incompatible with a DRM client technology installed in a set-top box in a set-top box environment to which a downloadable CAS technology is applied, the set-top box and the method thereof capable of downloading a proper DRM client for a safe content transmission are able to download the DRM client technology of the set-top box, which is same or compatible with the DRM client technology installed in the secondary device, from a security module download server in order to safely transmit content stored in the set-top box to the secondary device through a DRM encryption.
