The invention relates to a device for determining the thickness of the epidermis, which is suitable for use in the biological sciences and is based on in vivo transmittance measurements. The structure of the device includes an arrangement of optical fibres, formed by a group of one or more fibres. The two groups of fibres are joined at one end with a characteristic distance equal to the diameter of the fibres, while, at the other end, the groups of fibres are separated, forming two independent groups, the design thereof being such that variations in the thickness of the stratum corneum of 400 μm are not taken into account. The diameters of the fibres are in the range of 100 to 600 μm. One group of fibres is used for lighting, said group being coupled to a visible light source, such as a halogen lamp, an LED or a diode laser, all of which are preferably red (610-670 nm), while the other group, intended for collection, is used to measure the signal transmitted, which signal is processed by a spectrometer. |
