599593 A moulded, connectable thermoplastics tile 100 for forming, when joined to a plurality of tiles having the same configuration by adjacent edges, a resilient playground surface, the tile 100 having a rectangular form in a horizontal plane (when in use), an upper surface including friction-enhancing surface patterns and openings into drainage apertures, an underneath surface including support means and exits from the drainage apertures, a thickness, and four edges. Structures directed to formation of secure inter-tile joints or seams of a playground surface comprise a spaced-apart series of extended, moulded lugs 102 along two adjoining edges, each lug having an origin along the edge and an underneath surface in the same plane as the underneath surface of the tile 100, each lug being extended in the horizontal plane, and along the underside of the remaining two adjoining edges of the tile 100, a spaced-apart series of inwardly horizontally extended, moulded receptacles 301, each receptacle 301 comprising a space capable of receiving the neck and head of any one laterally extended moulded lug of an adjoining tile 100. Each lug has a horizontally directed neck having a neck length between the origin of the neck and an enlarged head having two ears 211, 211', one ear extending horizontally sideways from each side of the head terminating the neck, and a neck thickness of about half of the tile thickness, so that a welding wire may be laid on to the lugs 102 used on tiles already connected by the lugs 102 and subsequently heated thereby causing fusion of the tiles. Each receptacle 301 has a depth between the underneath surface and toward the top surface equal to or greater than the thickness of the lug, a head-receiving space, and a neck-receiving space having a length longer than the neck length of the extended lug between the head-receiving space and the edge of the tile 100, so that, when two tiles are connected by means of the lugs 102, each receptacle 301 is capable of maintaining a controlled horizontal tension within the neck of the connected lug thereby maintaining adjacent edges in close contact. |
