PURPOSE: A refrigerator and a method for controlling the same are provided to determine that a step valve is connected to a specific room according to a result of a sensor, thereby determining a faulty assembled state of the step valve. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling a refrigerator is as follows. A signal for opening a first step valve among a plurality of step valves is transmitted(S1). The inner temperature of a plurality of rooms is sensed(S3). The room in which the inner temperature is decreased is defined as a first room of the first step valve(S5). A refrigerator is composed of a body, a cooling device, a sensor, and a controlling unit. The controlling unit controls the cooling device and step valves. The controlling unit determines that the step valve is connected to a specific room according to a sensing result of the sensor.
