The invention relates to a system for converting electric energy into thermal energy. The system comprises: two electrodes (1, 2) which are separated by a distance d along the axis joining same and which can create field lines that define an area of influence when subjected to a potential difference (pd), a device (20) for providing electric power to the electrodes and capable of providing the potential difference (pd), and a device for igniting an electric arc between the two electrodes. Said ignition device comprises: a device (30) for emitting a laser pulse; and a device (40) for focusing the pulse at N focal points located in the influence area of the two electrodes, with a pulse peak power density per focal point of more than 1 GW/cm2, wherein N is determined as a function of the pulse peak power and distance d, which is fixed, such as to form an electrically conductive area between the two electrodes.
|
