PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a copolymer of a vinyl ester and a vinyl ether by which the copolymer in an arbitrary composition can be obtained, and by which the control of a molecular weight is easy.SOLUTION: A copolymer of a vinyl ester and a vinyl ether can be produced by copolymerizing a vinyl ester-based monomer and a vinyl ether-based monomer in the presence of a compound represented by formulas (1) and/or (2) (in formulas (1) and (2), Ris a 1-12C aliphatic hydrocarbon which may have a substituent; Rand Rare each a 1-12C aliphatic hydrocarbon; and Z is oxygen or sulfur), a radical polymerization initiator and a Lewis acid.
