The motor car silencer (1) has a silencer housing (2) having two silencer housing portions (2.1,2.2), an exhaust tube (3), an exhaust gas passage (4.1) and a heat exchanger (4). The silencer housing portions are connected to the exhaust tube and are arranged parallel to the exhaust gas passage. An upper valve (5.1) is arranged on an aperture (3.1) of the exhaust tube through which the exhaust gas volume flow rate is changed. The lower valve (6.1) is arranged in the region of an aperture (4.2) of the exhaust gas passage through which the exhaust gas volume flow rate is changed.
