The method involves recommending a fuel-filling procedure to a driver of the motor vehicle on the basis of certain edge conditions by an electronic control unit. A shutdown procedure is induced at a fuel cell system of the motor vehicle in case of a confirmation by the driver, so that the fuel cell system is already stopped while coupling the hydrogen tank at a tank place. The electronic control unit controls the operation of the fuel cell system in view of a favorable filling condition of the hydrogen tank or of a storage tank for electrical energy that is generated by the fuel cell system till the activation of the shutdown procedure.
