PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the rate of stoppage of a deposit/withdrawal device due to banknote jams and the like, reduce the rate of rejection due to skew, and prevent device failures such as belts snaking or coming loose.SOLUTION: The paper-slip handling device comprises: a deposit/withdrawal unit used for depositing and withdrawing paper slips; a paper-slip identification unit that identifies paper slips; a temporary holding compartment that temporarily stores deposited paper slips; a plurality of paper-slip storage compartments; and a first paper-slip transport path through which paper slips are transported to each of said units. The deposit/withdrawal unit comprises: an opening through which paper slips are transferred in a substantially horizontal state; a storage section that stores paper slips in a substantially upright state; and a second paper-slip transport path that connects the opening and the storage section. The paper slips are transported through the second paper-slip transport path while being switched between the substantially upright state and the substantially horizontal state. An upper belt provided above the second paper-slip transport path and a lower belt provided below the second paper-slip transport path are arranged not to face each other.
