PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a precious metal-carrying titanium dioxide mesocrystal which enables a highly efficient interparticle electron transfer and has a dramatically enhanced photocatalytic activity as compared to a non-carrying case, even when the amount of carriage of precious metal nanoparticles is reduced because of cost.SOLUTION: In a precious metal-carrying titanium dioxide mesocrystal, a titanium dioxide mesocrystal having a ratio of the average width to the average thickness (average width/average thickness) of 10-100 and an average specific surface area of not less than 10 m/g carries precious metal nanoparticles. For example, the precious metal-carrying titanium dioxide mesocrystal is obtained by a method involving a process in which a solution containing titanium dioxide mesocrystals having a ratio of the average width to the average thickness (average width/average thickness) of 10-100 and an average specific surface area of not less than 10 m/g, precious metal ions or precious metal compounds, and a positive hole scavenger is irradiated with ultraviolet and then sintered. |
