Provided is an intersection recognition apparatus that is mounted in a vehicle and characterized in being equipped with: an image acquisition unit that acquires an image of the surroundings of the vehicle during travel; an extraction unit that extracts the type and position of at least one traffic marker present near the vehicle from among the image of the vehicle surroundings acquired by the image acquisition unit; and a determining unit that determines whether an intersection is present on the basis of the type of the aforementioned at least one traffic marker extracted by the extraction unit and the relative positional relationship between the traffic marker and the vehicle.
