A circuit and a method for driving a backlight for an LCD device are provided to enhance color reproduction range by driving partially LEDs corresponding to color patterns of display images. A circuit and a method for driving a backlight for an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device includes a data sink unit(110), a data division unit(120), an average data calculation unit(130), an illumination gain controller(140), a dimming controller(150), a PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) generation unit(160), and an LED driver(170). The data sink unit receives image data from an external system and divides the received image data based on a frame unit. The data division unit divides the image data into plural data blocks. The average data calculation unit calculates a color average data of the image data on the data blocks. The illumination gain controller determines an illumination time ratio of red, green, and blue color LEDs(Light Emitting Diode) based on the color average data. The dimming controller determines an illumination time of the red, green, and blue color LEDs. The PWM generation unit generates PWM signals for controlling the red, green, and blue color LEDs. The LED driver controls illumination of the red, green, and blue color LEDs. |
