PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a particulate matter detection element and a particulate matter detection sensor that stably detect particulate matters at a low temperature and precisely detect a large amount of discharged particulate matters.SOLUTION: A PM detection element 10 includes at least a conductive substrate 100, and an electrode pair comprising a detection electrode 110 formed on its surface and including a polarizing electrode material and a reference electrode 120 formed to face the detection electrode 110. The detection electrode 110 faces a gas to be measured, and the reference electrode 120 is separated from the gas to be measured. A predetermined voltage is applied between the electrode pair to polarize electric charges in the PM detection element 10. A current change &Dgr;I to be obtained when the PM is deposited on the detection electrode 110 is measured, thereby quantitatively detecting the amount of PM with very high accuracy.
