PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber modifier that can add excellent gas barrier properties to a rubber material.SOLUTION: A rubber modifier contains a mixture of an isobutylene polymer having a structural unit expressed by the following formula (1) and a structural unit expressed by the following formula (2), and a laminar clay mineral organized by an organic onium ion. In the formula (2), X is a divalent group; Y is a substituted or unsubstituted alicyclic group having an unsaturated bond; and n is 0 or 1.
