The starter has a starter gear wheel (10) combined with another starter gear wheel (11) of an internal combustion engine for starting an internal combustion engine. A position sensor system (12) i.e. current sensor, detects position of the former starter gear wheel. A positioned unit (14) is provided for coupling- and decoupling of the former starter gear wheel to maintain a combined connection independently between the gear wheels in a non-energized state. The positioned unit comprises a worm drive with a worm shaft (15) and a worm wheel segment (16) that is combined with the worm shaft. The former starter gear wheel is designed as a pinion. The latter starter gear wheel is designed as toothed ring. An independent claim is also included for a method for starting an internal combustion engine of a motor car.
