PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for tire tread, capable of improving on-ice performance, and to provide a pneumatic tire.SOLUTION: A rubber composition for tire tread comprises: 100 pts.mass of a diene rubber; and 0.1 to 30 pts.mass of surface-treated cellulose particles that are surface-treated with succinic acid and/or its salt. A pneumatic tire includes a tread formed by using the rubber composition. It is preferable that the surface-treated cellulose particles are obtained by performing surface-treatment with a succinic acid alkali metal salt.
