The device (100) has a bent surface totally reflecting a portion of ambient light (60) entering through a surface (210) i.e. plane, into an elastic layer (200) so that the portion of the ambient light exits the elastic layer through the surface. A detection light source (120) emits detection light (122) in a direction of the elastic layer. The detection light is reflected by an object e.g. finger, when the object presses the surface to deform another surface (220). The detection light is again passed through the elastic layer and transmitted to an image detector (130). The image detector is a charge coupled device and a complementary metal oxide semiconductor sensor.
