ELECTROPHORETIC DISPLAY USING GASEOUS FLUID

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophoretic display where use of gaseous fluid instead of liquid in an electrophoretic medium provides substantial increase in switching speed.SOLUTION: One cell of a dual particle lateral movement display uses an electrophoretic medium comprising gas 106 containing: black particles 108 capable of being tribo-electrically charged to positive polarity and white particles 110 capable of being tribo-electrically charged to negative polarity. The display comprises: a rear substrate 116 holding a pixel electrode 114 covered by a colored dielectric layer 124; and a transparent front substrate 120 provided with a continuous transparent front electrode 112 and a transparent front protective sheet 128 which has mechanical protection to the front electrode. Side walls 122 extend between the front and rear substrates and define fine cells within which the gas and the particles are confined.
