An article is moulded by putting a fibrous substrate 27b into a mould 33, the fibrous substrate including a matrix forming material; putting a further element of matrix forming material 29a into the mould; and applying pressure. Ideally the further element of matrix forming material is adjacent a recess 35 on the mould, having a similar volume, so that it forms a feature on the final article. The fibres may be natural or synthetic such as recycled carbon fibres and woven, or unidirectional in tape form in a preconsolidated sheet. The two matrix forming materials may be composed of the same polymer, and be provided in solid or semisolid form. The further matrix material may include fibres that are shorter than the other fibres. The pressure could be applied by a second mould part or a vacuum bag, and thus could force the further matrix forming material into the recess of the mould, flowing through the fibrous substrate therebetween. There may be multiple fibrous substrates with the further matrix material forming a core. Closing of a mould could cut the substrate to size forming the final article. |
