The method involves forming a virtual stream of energy balance for determining a virtual cooling capacity, and determining a desired value for a temperature difference as a control variable, where the virtual stream of energy balance is formed such that the virtual energy power balance in all operating points of a heat pump or a refrigeration system is approximately proportional to a real power flow. A virtual energy flow characteristic is formed, and function values of the virtual cooling capacity are determined from the virtual energy flow characteristic.
