The system (10) has a stack (11) that comprises an anode channel (12) and a cathode channel (13) at a moderate temperature channel (18). The moderate temperature channel is thermally connected with the stack. A supply channel (45) serves during refrigeration operation, over which a steam generation device (29) is feeding connected at the moderate temperature channel during a stack heating phase. The steam generation device comprises a burner (28) connected with a reformation reactor (27). The reformation reactor and a shift reactor (37) are connected in series. An independent claim is also included for a method for starting a fuel cell system.
