The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition and a food composition containing asterubine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient for preventing or treating metabolic syndrome for preventing. Asterubine of the present invention has an effect of increasing phosphorylation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and absorption of glucose in muscular cells, thereby being used in a pharmaceutical composition and a health food for preventing or treating metabolic syndrome.
