The present invention detects currents, flowing through a fluorescent lamp, in real time during preheating or discharge, performs minimum preheating necessary for the operation of the fluorescent lamp during the preheating, and controls power, supplied to the fluorescent lamp, in real time according to the conducting state of the fluorescent lamp during the discharge. Therefore, the present invention maximizes the impedance of the fluorescent lamp to enable the high efficiency operation of the fluorescent lamp. The present invention provides a method for driving a fluorescent lamp, the method comprising the steps of: receiving commercial AC power, performing full-wave rectification for the applied AC power, and smoothing the rectified AC power; performing a control operation for detecting the currents of the rectified and smoothed power in real time, varying a duty ratio if currents lower than set currents are input so that low frequency power can be applied to a preheat path directly connected to the fluorescent lamp, and varying the duty ratio if currents higher than the set currents are input so that high frequency power can be distributed to a discharge path of the fluorescent lamp; switching the low frequency power to the preheat path, directly connected to the fluorescent lamp, according to signals which are output in the control step; and distributing the high frequency power to the discharge path of the fluorescent lamp according to the signals which are output in the control step, and switching the high frequency power so that power applied to the preheat path can be reduced as much as the discharge power of the fluorescent lamp.
