The present invention relates to a ballast for a high voltage discharge lamp comprising an input means which supplies power applied from the outside to a lamp through a relay driving circuit (RL1) and a choke coil; a power blocking means which blocks input power by an operation of the relay driving circuit (RL1) when an accident sensing means senses a no-load state or a short circuit state; the choke coil which is electrically connected to the input means and includes inductance; an alarm generating means which visually displays an input power blocking state through a LED (L1) when the input power is blocked by the power blocking means and generates alarm sounds through an alarm sound generating means (B1); the accident sensing means which senses a voltage difference between both ends of the lamp to sense the no-load state or short circuit state so that the power blocking means can block the input power; and an igniter which generates a high voltage pulse for lighting the lamp by using the choke coil. The present invention can promptly block power and generate alarm sounds at the same time of displaying the accident situations by a LED lamp when accidents such as a no-load or short circuit situation, etc. occur, thereby advantageously reducing unnecessary electric power, maximizing safety by preventing a fire, etc. due to overheating and allowing a worker to properly handle the accident situations by promptly recognizing the accident situations visually and acoustically.
