A printers' blanket is made by impregnating a woven or felted woollen base with an ink or oil resisting composition consisting of nitrocellulose or other cellulose ester, cellulose ether, or other synthetic plastic, dissolved in a preferably volatile solvent. The impregnation is effected by drawing the material across a suction-box, or by soaking, after which the material is cut into appropriate lengths. Alternatively, impregnation may be effected during the formation of the material. The impregnation may be through the whole body of the blanket, but preferably extends to less than a quarter of its thickness, and leaves a resilient surface, which may be ground to the desired smoothness. |
