PURPOSE: A surge protection system and method of an energy storage device are provided to detect a current through a current detection circuit, thereby facilitating facility management and maintenance and inspection. CONSTITUTION: A surge protection system (100) of an energy storage device (118) comprises a metal shielding housing (102) and surge protect devices (SPDs). Current detection circuits detect a current flowing in each line of SPDs. A monitoring device (110) receives bytes formed with bits corresponding to signals outputted from the current detection circuits. A determination device determines the inflow and outflow path of surge flowing into the SPDs with the bytes inputted to the monitoring device.
