A gaming machine is provided which includes a processor, a gaming machine memory storing at least one software module and instructions to cause the processor to generate a game of chance played on the gaming machine, and at least one non-volatile memory 5 device connected to the processor. The non-volatile memory device is adapted to store an information module which comprises data values relating to hard meter parameters of the gaming machine. The processor, the gaming machine memory and the non volatile memory device all reside on the logic circuitry of the gaming machine, and the software module contains instructions operable to cause the processor to increment at 10 least one of the data values relating to hard meter parameters when a prescribed event occurs. Furthermore, the gaming machine is configured to maintain data values held in the information module when the at least one game software module is upgraded or during a memory reset operation.
