The operation unit (10) has multiple control elements (16b) variable between a retracted position and an extended position. A user interface is formed as a three-dimensional structure by using the control elements. A control side of each control element is formed as a planar surface. Maximum length of the control side of each control element is larger than distance between adjacent control elements. Maximum length of the control side is distance between two points on the control side of the respective control element, where the points are arranged at long distance from each other. The control side is formed in a polygon shape i.e. rectangular shape. The user interface is designed as a thin and flexible cover. An independent claim is also included for a method for providing control functions by using an operation unit.
