The engine (10) has two cylinder banks (12, 14) including cylinder groups (16-22) with eight cylinders (1-8), respectively. The cylinders are fluidically connected with respective exhaust gas inlets of a loading device of the engine via exhaust gas lines (26a-26h). A fuel-air-mixture is ignited in a preset ignition order of the first, fifth, fourth, second, sixth, third, seventh and eighth cylinders. Ignition spacings between the cylinders of the cylinder groups amount to 180 degree crank angle. The exhaust gas inlets are fluidically separated from each other.
