A threaded bone fastener (10) includes a threaded shank (12), a head (13) extending from the shank (12), and one or more expandable elements (14), each having a distal end or a proximal end pivotally attached to the shank (12). The expandable elements (14) are expandable radially outwards from the shank (14) and contractible radially inwards towards the shank (12). Expansion and contraction of the expandable elements (14) does not change an overall length of the shank (12).
