The method involves extending a measuring value with measurement of internal resistor (13) of an exhaust-gas sensor during a present or an expected excess or falling below of the measuring value. The exhaust-gas sensor is loaded for measuring the internal resistor with measuring current. Output voltage of the exhaust-gas sensor is evaluated. The measuring current is increased by increase of the measuring current or by reduction of load resistor (12). The measuring current is reduced by reduction of the measuring current or by increase of the load resistor. An independent claim is also included for a device for rating a state of an exhaust-gas sensor.
