The excavator has a pneumatic suction turbine (2) for generating a suction airflow. The suction turbine is attached on a collection container (3). A guide space (4) is located above the suction turbine to conduct a suction airflow stream. Filters (6, 6a-6d) are arranged in a filtration chamber (7) in the suction airflow. The filters are combined as a filter basket (8), so that the filter basket comprises an arrangement of the filters. One or multiple guides are provided at the filter basket. The filter basket is arranged at a rear end (38) of a vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a suction excavator.
