<p>A mounting bar 40, for an underwater acoustic reflector 50 for use under water, comprises means for engaging the bar in a hole or recess in the shell of an acoustic reflector which comprises a shell surrounding a core. Preferably the mounting bar is made from the same material as the shell of the acoustic reflector, suitable materials include: glass fibre reinforced polypthalamide; epoxy impregnated carbon fibre; epoxy impregnated aramid fibre; epoxy impregnated poly(p-phenylen-2,6-benzobisoxazole) fibre; epoxy impregnated polythene fibre; aluminium; or aluminium alloy. The bar may be tapered at one end to be received, and optionally friction welded, in the hole or recess of the shell. The bar may include external threads at one end, for engaging with threads in the hole or recess of the shell. At least two bars may be mounted in close proximity to each other, each having an acoustic reflector mounted thereon to provide distance information to a scanning sonar system 54. The mounting bar may be mounted on a frame 48, in combination with other similarly mounted acoustic reflectors, to reflect location identification information such as letters or numbers to a scanning sonar system.</p> |
