[Class 46.] A device for softening water in the cistern of a domestic supply comprises a vessel charged with sodium carbonate or similar watersoftening agent and having openings in or near the top only through which water can enter to form a solution of the reagent and the solution can diffuse into the water in the cistern. The vessel A, Fig. 3, may have a perforated top, or a closed top and perforations C, in the side wall. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the vessel A is open and surrounded by a perforated inverted vessel F, which may be provided with catches G to engage the vessel A.
