A magnetic head 500 includes a slider 504 having a media-facing air bearing surface (ABS) 506, and a device or actuator 508 coupled to the slider and being selectively extendible for selectively contacting a magnetic medium 510 at a frequency of between about 200 and about 600 kHz. The head may include a waveguide core 514 and magnetic core 512. The device may be a near field transducer (NFT) for thermally assisted recording (TAR). The device expands and contracts at the frequency when heated and cooled for inducing a thermal protrusion of the media facing surface. Selective contacting at the frequency induces an oscillation in the flying height of the slider and contact can be detected by analysis of a read signal. The head may further comprise a heater for moving the device towards the magnetic medium. The near field transducer may be actuated at the same frequency as the ABS naturally resonates to maintain relatively constant clearance between the ABS and the medium. |
