The method involves activating an application of a data processing device e.g. personal computer (PC), which is attached to a communication transmitting device, based on user input. Key allocation information is displayed for the respective key allocation of the device using the application. The functional keys (FK) at the device are assigned with the associated key allocation based on the selection of the displayed information. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a communication system for allocating/engaging a key of a communication transmitting device (2) a communication transmitting device for allocating a key.
