A brush for use in indentation therapy comprises a rigid base member 11, 12, 13, 51, which may be flat or convex, and has an array of flexible bristles 14, 15, 16, 52 some of which are up to 2.5 mm longer, preferably 0.5 to 2.0mm longer, than adjacent bristles. The longer bristles are distributed uniformly in the array of bristles and constitute up to 60 percent of the total number of bristles. The bristles may extend away the base a length of 20 mm. The device may be formed from a plurality of rigid base members each having an array of bristles. End regions of each base member may be pivotally attached to an end region of an adjacent base member for movement in planes parallel to the profile of the tips of the bristles. Fastening means may be provided for fastening adjacent base members relative to each other in a desired disposition or configuration. When the appliance is pressed with bristles against the skin of a living subject, the longer bristles indent the skin without piercing it, causing therapeutic effects.
